London Black Cab

FAQs

What makes a London black cab different from a minicab?

Black cabs (Hackney Carriages) can be flagged in the street and have drivers who passed The Knowledge — a 3–4 year exam memorising every street, hotel and landmark within 6 miles of Charing Cross. Minicabs (PHV) must be pre-booked via a licensed operator and have no Knowledge requirement.

Are London black cabs all electric?

Almost — since 2018 every new London taxi must be zero-emission capable. The LEVC TX5 (electric range-extended) is the standard new cab. Pre-2018 diesel cabs are being phased out by 2032.

How much is a London black cab?

Metered: tariff 1 (Mon–Fri 6am–8pm) starts at £3.80 with a minimum £3.80 fare. A typical 3 km central trip is £10–£14. Heathrow to central is £75–£95. There is no surge — TfL sets the tariff.

Can I pay a black cab by card?

Yes — every London black cab has had a contactless card reader by TfL mandate since October 2016. Apple Pay, Google Pay and chip-and-pin all accepted. No surcharge.

How do I get a black cab?

Flag one with its yellow 'TAXI' light on, walk to a marked taxi rank (570 across London), or book through FREE NOW / Gett apps.
