Hammerton's Ferry (Twickenham)

A small clinker-built ferry crossing the Thames between Twickenham (Marble Hill) and Ham House on the Richmond bank. Run by Mr Hammerton and his successors since 1908.

Route

Between Hammerton's Ferry steps on Marble Hill foreshore (Twickenham TW1 2NL) and the Ham House landing on the Surrey bank. Crossing time: about 90 seconds. Foot passengers, dogs and bicycles welcome.

Hours

Daily 10:00–18:00 (Summer) and 10:00–dusk (Winter). Closed during high winds or floods. On demand — call from the landing.

Why it matters

The Thames Path crosses here — without the ferry, walkers between Richmond and Twickenham face a 2 km detour via Richmond Bridge or Teddington Lock. The ferry has been a continuous service since Walter Hammerton started it in 1908 with a single rowing boat.

Getting there

Nearest stations: St Margarets or Twickenham (South Western Railway). 10–15 minute walk through Marble Hill Park.
