Lime E-Scooter

Lime is one of the operators in Transport for London's official rental e-scooter trial, alongside Dott (and previously Voi). Green-and-white Lime scooters are speed-capped at 12.5 mph and geo-fenced to participating boroughs. Private e-scooters remain illegal on London roads, pavements and cycle lanes.

Legal reminder: Only rental e-scooters from the TfL trial are legal on London roads and cycle lanes. Private e-scooters are illegal on public land. Always 18+, UK driving licence required, no pavement riding.

FAQs

Are Lime e-scooters legal in London?

Only rental e-scooters from the official TfL trial — including Lime — are legal on roads and cycle lanes in participating boroughs. Private e-scooters remain illegal on all public land (police can seize them and issue £300 fines + 6 licence points).

Where can I ride a Lime e-scooter in London?

Only within the geo-fenced trial zones across nine boroughs. Outside the zone the scooter slows to a stop and you cannot park it. The Lime app shows live ride and parking areas.

Do I need a driving licence for Lime scooters?

Yes — UK provisional or full car driving licence. Lime verifies it in the app before your first ride. You must be 18 or over.

Can Lime scooters go on pavements?

No — it is illegal to ride any e-scooter (rental or private) on a pavement in the UK. Use cycle lanes or roads with a 30 mph or lower limit.

How fast does a Lime trial scooter go?

Capped at 12.5 mph (20 km/h) by software — lower than the 15.5 mph limit for private e-bikes. The cap applies to all TfL trial operators.
